Ayurveda emphasizes
preventive and healing therapies along with various methods of purification and
rejuvenation. Ayurveda is more than healing system; it is a science and complete
art of appropriate living which helps to achieve longevity. It can guide every
individual a perfect diet according to their body type, living habits and
exercise to restore balance in the body, mind and soul, and will prevent from
diseases.
According to Ayurveda,
every human being is a unique phenomenon or has individual body type of cosmic
consciousness which govern through the 5 basic elements – sky, earth, air (vata),
fire (pita) & water (kapha). Vata, Pita & Kapha called Tridosha, meaning the 3
main elements of the body or organizations of the body, which are also derived
from consciousness. Every individual constitution has its own unique balance of
Vata, Pita or Kapha (VPK). The balance of VPK is the natural order, so when any
one of them is disturbed (imbalanced), it creates problems (diseases). You can
call it disorder. This exits when the digestive Fire (Agni) is imbalanced
condition: the 3 waste products like urine, stools (feces) and sweat are not on
the routine. It means that the 7 Dhatus (bodily tissues) like Rasa, Rakta, Mansa,
Meda, Asthi, and Majja & Shukra are not functioning normally and mind, senses
and consciousness are not working well. So each & individual has to balance VPK.
Wrong diet, habits, lifestyle, seasonal changes, repressed emotions and stress
factors can all act either together or separately to change the balance of VPK.
According to the nature of the cause, V, P or K undergo aggravation or
derangement which affects the Agni (digestive fire), and produces Ama (toxins).
This accumulated toxicity, once well established, will slowly affect Prana
(vital life energy), Ojas (immunity), and Tejas (cell metabolic energy) and
result in disease. Ama (toxins) is the basic internal cause of all disease, due
to the aggravated Doshas.
To stop the further
production of Ama, here is the key to the prevention or cure of disease:
PANCHAKARMA (Panch means 5, Karma mean to do something or apply something).
Ayurvedic books suggests putting the person on the proper diet(according to
imbalance of V, or P, or K) with appropriate lifestyle, habits, exercise and
administering a proper cleansing program, such as PanchaKarma. PanchaKarma is
full thought of as the entire procedure, it really is only one part of a group
of therapies belonging to a class of cleansing procedures, called SHODAN, whose
purpose is to prepare the body for elimination of excess Dosha (V, or P, or K)
and toxins. For those not strong enough for SHODAN, there is such a group of
milder techniques called SHAMAN. These will set on Agni (enkindle fire), that
is, metabolic fire or digestive fire and burn the Ama (toxins).
PURVAKARMA: Pre-purification to prepare
the Body
Before the actual
operation of purification begins, there is a need to prepare the body via
prescribed methods to encourage the body to let go of the toxins. The 2 most
common & useful methods are Snehan and Swedan. Shehan is the medicated oil
massage. Oil will be applied on the whole body with a particular type of
Ayurvedic massage which helps the toxins to move towards the gastro-intestinal
track. This oil massage will make deep tissues soft and supple. It will also
help to remove stress and nourish the nervous system. Snehan is given daily for
3 to 5 day or up to 7 days, as indicated. Swedan, is sweating (sudation) and
always given immediately following the Snehan. Mixtures of herbal remedies may
be added to the steam help losing the toxins from person. Generally, Swedan will
try to melt or liquefies the toxins and will move towards the gastro-intestinal
tract to get rid off. After 3 to 7 days of Snehan & Swedan, the doshas (VPK)
become ripened. This is really good sign. And now particular PanchaKarma method
is given according to the individual’s body type (V or P or K) and disorder.
Five Basic Shodhans(cleansing methods)
-
Vaman: therapeutic vomiting or emesis
-
Virechan: purgation
-
Basti: enema
-
Nasya: application of medicated oils through the nose
-
Raktamokshana: detoxification of the blood
VAMAN: Emetic(vomiting) Therapy
When there is a person
with congestion in the lungs causing colds, cough, asthma, bronchitis or
breathing problem, the great Vaman, to eliminate the KAPHA imbalance(water, body
type)causing the excess mucus. After the Snehan & Swedan, 2-3 glasses of salt
water with some herbs [madan phal (emetic nut), yastimadhu (licorice), kutaj,
etc.] to be given to have vomit. After vomiting, the mucus is released the
person will feel instantly relived. Most of the congestion, wheezing,
breathlessness and other related problems will disappear and the sinuses become
clear. If Vaman is administrated properly, the person should feel better in the
lungs, will be able to breathe freely, will have lightness in the chest and all
symptoms of congestion disappear.
VIRECHAN: An Act of Cleansing Therapy
When there is a person
with constipation, any types of skin disorder, high depression, mental problems,
etc, the great Virechan, to eliminate the VATA imbalance(air, body type) causing
the excess of the gas/air in stomach, wherever its travel in the body, it blocks
the circulation. Ayurvedic literature suggests that in these cases the
administration of a therapeutic laxative will help. Virechan is facilitated with
Triphala, ginger powder, castor oil in a combination that is appropriate for the
individual person. You will have loose motions just one or two times but this is
a part of cleansing your system so doesn’t be afraid. If Virechan is
administrated properly, the person will lighter. Person will be able to think
better & feel great.
BASTI: Enema Therapy
Vata’s predominant
(rule over) site is the
Colon.
Ayurvedic Basti involves the introduction into the rectum of concoctions of
Sesame Seeds Oil and some other herbal preparations. Basti is the most effective
& important treatment of Vata (air) disorders. It relives constipation, sexual
disorders, heart pain, back pain, sciatica, pain in the joints, arthritis,
rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms, and headaches may also be treated with
Basti. Most of the people are imbalance of Vata(air).
NASYA: Nasal Administration
The nose is the
doorway to the brain and to our great consciousness. The Nasal Administration of
medicated oil is called Nasya. An excess of bodily humours accumulated in the
sinus, throat, nose and head areas is eliminated by the NOSE. Prana (vital life
energy), it enters the body through the breath taken in through the nose. Prana
is in the brain and maintains sensory, motor functions, mental activities &
memory life (concentration). So disturb Prana creates problems in all the
functions and produces headaches, convulsions, loss of memory, sinus congestion,
migraine, eye problems & ear problems. If Nasya is administrated properly, you
will have sneeze for 2-3 times, but it will be great sign. One may use this
treatment each morning and/or evening. In this way breathing patterns will
change as the emotions are released and eyesight also will improve.
RAKTAMOKSHANA: An Ayurvedic Method for
Purification of the Blood
According to Ayurveda,
toxins stays in the gastro-intestinal tract are absorbed into the blood and
circulated throughout the body. This is the basic cause of hypertension and
certain other circulatory conditions like all types of skin disorders. In such a
conditions, along with internal medication, elimination of the toxins and
purification of the blood is necessary. Pita (fire) is produced from the
disintegrated red blood cells in the liver. So Pitta (fire) and blood have a
very close relationship. Generally, an increase of Pita (fire) may go into the
blood causing toxicity and creates such problems like all types of skin
disorders. Extracting a small amount of blood from a vein relives the tension
created by Pita (fire). Generally, when you will do this therapy, after
sometimes blood will be stopped automatically, and tube won’t pass anymore blood
throughout. Its like body knows how much to throw out.
Shiro Dhara: Flowing Stream
Shiro Dhara is a sacred
Ayurvedic healing practice that involves playing a continues fine stream of
warmed oil onto the forehead. It has become one of the most sought after
treatments in the spa industries of
Europe & the
North America, but this system is originally from India. It is a great helpful
tool in any mental conditions (like stress, hair loss, depression, anxiety) &
all types of
Vata problems.

View of Massage
"Physical
therapy’s purpose is to restore neuromuscular functioning after some damage,
whereas massage therapy has systemic effects. It influences your immune system,
your endocrine System, your cardiovascular system”. Dr. Chopra.
Ayurvedic massage uses essential oils that are chosen to suit your dosha. The
massage techniques used include tapping, kneading and squeezing as well as the
more traditional massage strokes you would expect. The style and flow of the
massage is determined by who you are, and what your body needs for balance and
wellbeing at the time.
An Ayurvedic therapist is trained to focus on the "marma points" - similar to
the pressure points in reflexology, acupuncture and acupressure.
When combined with other Ayurvedic principles (eating a range of food prescribed
by one's dosha, for example, or exercising at certain times of the day), the
massage is designed to:
* detoxify and cleanse
* boost the effectiveness of the immune system
* keep healthy people in good health
* help those with medical conditions
